It’s Hard to Kill a Crow

| 25/04/2011

In the midst of a resurgent Vic Park, Crow Books is fast-developing into one of Perth’s best independent bookshops. It is open 7 days a week til 9pm and later every night. As customers with all different interests return with friends and acquaintances, a community of readers is growing and Crow Books is becoming a place where people mix and share ideas. With its lo-fi fit-out (couches, chairs, music…) the shop has a great atmosphere any time of the day.

book shop, perthSpurning the mass market, scorched-earth policy of big retail, Crow Books’ popularity grows as it stocks alternative books and responds to its customers’ interests. Areas such as tattoo books, lowbrow art and graphic novels are particularly successful and driven by customers’ interest in specific artists and series.

Crow Books is also striving to cultivate readership in areas generally not being well serviced in Perth. Literary fiction and poetry, for example, are areas that only work where staff are knowledgeable and can make recommendations.

Crow Books is passionate about West Australian literary culture. They have a dedicated WA Writers section including many backlist authors not generally held on bookshop shelves anymore. Crow Books also encourages self-published local authors by taking books and zines on consignment.

Crow Books sees itself as part of the Vic Park community, as well as the wider literary community in Perth.
